Movtivated by my own experiences leading a process group at a treatment center, this workshop will explore the unique dynamics of leading process groups in a treatment center, reflect on some of the benefits and common struggles, and identify appropriate goals for process group work in this setting.
Course Description
Running a group with therapists who are invested in their learning and personal growth as a means to support themselves and running your first process group in private practice or at a treatment center are very different clinical situations. Interventions and ways of conceptualizing groupwork at GPALA conferences can fall flat when tried in a young group that is still forming and understanding how to work together. In this workshop, we will explore the idea of the pre-analytic patient, identify ways to intervene on an interpersonal and group level that helps to teach pre-analytic patients how to deepen their self-reflection and capacity for emotional connection. When working with an early group, it is important to keep an eye on the emotional thermometer, so that group members don't get overwhelmed and are left unable to emotionally digest the material. This workshop will include lecture, case examples and discussion.

Attendees will:

Define traits of a pre-analytic patient, and the narcissistic defense and how it may present in group.

Identify an object-oriented question and explain its use in group therapy.

Describe the arc of psychological development that object-oriented questions aim to encourage: from narcissistic preoccupation to awareness of objects.

Utilize object-oriented questions to promote progressive communication in group.
3 CEs will be given for attendance.
